Homeschool Fair at Fort Hood and Other News

The Fort Hood Child and Youth Services School Liaison Office hosted a homeschool resource fair this past Friday for military families homeschooling their children. CYS offers assistance to homeschool parents in the military. Any families interested in homeschooling or who need assistance may contact the the School Liaison Office.

The Pacific Standard has an article about the state of homeschooling in America. They state, “Today’s homeschool advocates are parents who don’t believe that the current school model is best, or enough, for their children.” In the article they note that than in 2012 a third of middle and high school students were taking online courses. Those numbers came from the National Center for Education Statistics.

University of Arizona has a pair of homeschooled siblings, Justin and Rhyanna Fleming, who are just 14 and 16 years old, respectively. The sophomores were taken out of public school and homeschooled by their single mother, Kristen who worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Although the teens were originally turned away from UA, it didn’t deter their efforts to enroll in college early.
