One in ten parents admit to using voice assistants like Alexa and Siri when homeschooling their children, research has found. The number of children being homeschooled has more than doubled in five years, and in some areas has risen by more than 700%. And parts of the country where only a small number of children were registered as being homeschooled five years ago are now reporting figures in the hundreds.
The number of children being homeschooled has risen by about 40% over three years, the BBC has found. Across the UK 48,000 children were being home-educated in 2016-17, up from about 34,000 in 2014-15.
The current homeschooling laws have created a “hidden population” of children which is impossible to monitor, officials in Glasgow have warned. Under the current law, parents are not required to register their children for homeschooling.
