California State Homeschool Fact Sheet

  • Approximately 178,695 children in California are homeschooled
  • Compulsory attendance for children between the ages of 6 and under 18
  • Homeschoolers may establish a private school themselves or enroll in a satellite program offered by a private school
  • No standardized testing required
  • Homeschool graduates may earn the equivalent of a public school diploma by taking the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE)

Common Core Status


The Common Core is permeating many facets of education in California. The California Department of Education is working to align the definition of college and career readiness for California businesses and postsecondary institutions with the Common Core. Additionally, standards for technical instruction in California have been aligned to the Common Core.
