HSLDA attorney Scott Woodruff addressed the Iowa Government Oversight Committee during a special session on child abuse and homeschooling.

After a tragic series of incidents where two homeschooled 16-year-old girls were abused and killed, Iowa legislators called a special session to discuss policy going forward to prevent further tragedies.

Both girls were in foster care and their families had prior abuse complaints.

Some legislators argued for stricter restrictions on homeschooling, including yearly home visits, to prevent further instances of abuse.

Citing a 2016 report on child abuse, Woodruff argued that Iowa’s Department of Human Services should focus on the primary risk factors and any new policies should apply to all families and not just those that choose to homeschool.
